A Marion man is in police custody after trying to rob someone with a sawed-off shotgun.
Around 12:30 a.m. Sunday morning, Officers of the Marion Police Department responded to the 140 block of South Main Street to investigate the report of a man being robbed at gunpoint by a subject brandishing a sawed-off shotgun. The suspect fled southbound from the area after getting a small amount of cash from the victim.
Approximately 15 minutes later, police located Jon Cocherl (49 years old, Marion) Someplace Else Bar on S. Main St. with a sawed-off shotgun protruding from the waistband of his pants. The investigation led to his arrest and pending charges of Aggravated Robbery, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Weapons Under Disability, Carrying a Weapon into a Liquor Permit Establishment, Weapons While Intoxicated and Unlawful Possession of a Dangerous Ordinance.
Lt. Mike Shade was quoted in a press release stating, "It is absolutely amazing that he could claim that he was unaware that carrying a sawed-off shotgun into a bar is against the law, but then again, we are talking about someone who appears to have a sole motive of obtaining some drinking money in committing Aggravated Robbery"
